3D High Definition Scanning: The Ins and Outs

3D High Definition Scanning: The Ins and Outs

3d high definition scanning

Technology allows us, as land surveyors and civil engineers, to better perform tasks with a more seamless approach. 3D High Definition Scanning, also referred to as 3D laser scanning, has allowed us to gather information and measurements regardless of the size and complexity of the environment. With ever emerging technology, it can be hard to keep up. Before you begin your next project, take a minute to understand what 3D High Definition Scanning is and how it can benefit your project.

WHO PERFORMS 3D HIGH DEFINITION SCANNING?

At WLC, our land surveyors perform 3D laser scanning and work with our CADD technicians and engineers. Together they can deliver the information in various formats. Our land surveyors are highly experienced and educated in providing the most accurate, timely, and detailed information using 3D laser scanning.

WHAT DOES 3D HIGH DEFNITION SCANNING DO?

3D laser scanning is a tool used to gather detailed measurements and existing conditions of complex environments, geometries, and its surroundings in a matter of minutes. With the measurements, data and information, photorealistic and three-dimensional images of the environment are produced.

WHEN IS 3D HIGH DEFINITION SCANNING USED?

Projects that are best suited for 3D High Definition Scanning are those that require complex and accurate data and measurements. For example, water treatment plants with thousands of feet of intricate piping, substations with detailed facilities and wiring, and existing buildings in need of remodels or renovations.

WHERE DOES 3D LASER SCANNING TAKE PLACE?

3D laser scanning is performed on the project site. It takes place in the actual space you are gathering data on or will be performing the work.

WHY SHOULD YOUR PROJECT INCLUDE 3D HIGH DEFINITION SCANNING?

If your project requires measurements in hard to reach or hazardous locations you will benefit from 3D High Definition Scanning. Using a 3D laser scanner allows you to gather unlimited measurements. Additional reasons to consider 3D laser scanning include quick and non-intrusive scanning, fast and accurate data, and eliminating any reason to return to the project site for additional measurements.

HOW DOES 3D LASER SCANNING WORK?

WLC uses the FARO Laser Scanner, Focus3D for high-speed 3D laser Scanning. Using laser technology, it scans an environment to develop photorealistic and three-dimensional images of an environment. The images are a result of millions of 3D measurement points taken in a matter of minutes. The highly detailed scan allows us to get an exact measurement from any point to another without taking a physical measurement. After the millions of data points are captured, they can then be delivered in a variety of formats for the client and project team.

For your next project, consider hiring an experienced team to perform 3D laser scanning to better provide detailed documentation on the environment. For more information about the 3D laser scanning work WLC performs, visit our projects page and select 3D High Definition Scanning.
